Becoming the happiest homemaker this might sound like a strange dream. Some people believe that being a homemaker isn’t a dream at all, but a duty that adult women must accept. Many hold the view that a homemaker is a weak woman who depends on her husband. You might even think that being a homemaker isn’t a dream job. But for me, this is my dream. In the future, I want to be a homemaker.
Merriam-Webster defines the term housewife as a woman who is responsible for all the needs of her household and is married. From the author’s perspective, a housewife is a married woman who performs domestic activities to build the harmony and resilience of the family. The question is whether being a “housewife” is a job or an activity?
The difference in the meaning of “job” becomes an interesting subject when it is written on the Indonesian National Identity Card (KTP). For some housewives, the column is filled with “housewife.” The question then is, “is being a housewife a job or a profession?” Meanwhile, from a literal perspective, job is identical to profession and career. This can be understood from the definition that a job is defined as an active human activity that produces a valuable work in the form of a monetary reward for someone. A profession, on the other hand, is a job that requires training and mastery of a specific body of knowledge. The Indonesian Dictionary states that a profession is a field of work based on certain vocational, skill, and expertise education. Based on this understanding, the domestic work that is identical to a job or profession is that of a maid or a babysitter. Being a housewife, in contrast, is an activity of managing and running a household based on the values of life and religion (Heri Junaidi,2017,hal.79)
To my mind, a homemaker is a woman of a thousand strengths. She cooks like a chef, recites the Quran like a religious teacher, manages the home like an accountant, and can even do graphic design like an architect. What’s not to love about being a homemaker?
However, the path to becoming a homemaker is not always smooth. There are several challenges, such as finances, creativity, innovation, and even time management. For example, to become a great cook, good financial resources are essential. I would need to pay for cooking classes. I also have to have new ideas about what to cook. On top of that, I have to think about innovation to keep up with culinary trends and manage my time as best as I can to live my life without discomfort.
That’s why I choose to become a homemaker. By being a homemaker, I can do anything I want. I can work without pressure and fulfill all my dreams without having to choose just one. That’s why being a happy homemaker is my most perfect aamiin.
